7 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Customers (And How to Fix Each One)

Most business owners do not know their website is broken until they are looking at 12 months of flat revenue wondering where the leads went.

The problem is not that you are not getting traffic. It is that your website is actively pushing people away. And the signs are right there in your analytics. You just need to know what to look for.

Here are 7 signs your website is losing you customers — and exactly how to fix each one.

1. Your Bounce Rate Is Over 53%

If more than half the people who land on your site leave without clicking anything, your site is failing. The average across all industries is 53%. Local service businesses should aim for 40% or lower.

What it means: Your site does not match what people expected when they clicked. Either your headline is wrong, your load time is too slow, or your design does not look trustworthy.

How to fix it:

  • Check if your headline matches the search intent. If people search "roof repair Gaithersburg" and land on a page about "our company history," fix the page.
  • Load time is the #1 cause of high bounce. If your site takes more than 3 seconds, you are losing 40% of visitors before they see anything.
  • Look at your site on a phone. If it is hard to read or navigate, that is your bounce right there.

2. Your Site Loads in Over 3 Seconds

This is the biggest one. Google data shows that 53% of mobile users leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. And the average load time for small business websites? 4.7 seconds.

What it means: You are losing half your potential customers before they even see your site. Every second past 3 seconds costs you roughly 20% of conversions.

How to fix it:

  • Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your mobile score is under 80, you have work to do.
  • Compress images. Most business sites have unoptimized hero images that are 2-5MB. They should be under 200KB.
  • Get off shared hosting. A $10/month shared hosting plan is the #1 cause of slow WordPress sites.
  • Cut unnecessary plugins. Every plugin adds JavaScript. Less code equals faster load.

3. 75% of Visitors Never Scroll Past the First Screen

That stat comes from a Nielson Norman Group study, and it is brutal. Three out of four people do not see anything below your hero section.

What it means: Everything important needs to be above the fold. If your phone number, your main service, your CTA, and your trust signals are below the scroll, most people never see them.

How to fix it:

  • Your phone number needs to be in the header, visible at all times, and clickable on mobile.
  • Your main value proposition needs to be in the first 2 sentences.
  • Put your most important CTA (call now, get a quote, book a consultation) above the fold.
  • Add a trust signal above the fold — a review quote, a certification badge, or a "serving [city] since 2018" line.

4. Your Contact Form Gets 0 Submissions

If you have a contact form and nobody uses it, it is not because people do not want to contact you. It is because your form is broken, buried, or too long.

What it means: Either the form does not work (and nobody told you), or the friction is too high.

How to fix it:

  • Test your own form. Every month. Send a test submission and make sure the email arrives.
  • Shorten it. Name, email, phone, message. That is it. Every extra field costs you 10-15% of submissions.
  • Put the form on every page, not just the contact page. A service page without a form is a dead end.
  • Consider a phone number instead. For service businesses, a click-to-call button converts better than any form.

5. Your Site Looks Different on a Phone

This is 2026. If your site is not mobile-first, it is barely functional. Over 65% of local searches happen on mobile devices. For contractors, that number is over 80%.

What it means: If your site looks cramped, has tiny buttons, requires pinching to zoom, or has menus that are impossible to tap with a thumb, you are losing mobile visitors.

How to fix it:

  • Open your site on an actual phone. Not a Chrome DevTools simulation. A real phone.
  • Check that buttons are at least 48px tall (big enough to tap without aiming).
  • Make sure your menu is a hamburger or sticky nav, not a desktop-style horizontal menu.
  • Test your click-to-call button. If it does not trigger a phone call on mobile, fix it.

6. You Are Not Ranking for Your Own Business Name

This one sounds crazy, but it is common. A Gaithersburg roofing company we worked with was not ranking for their own business name. Their site was so slow and unoptimized that Google was showing their competitors' ads on their own brand search.

What it means: If you cannot rank for your own name, you have a technical SEO problem that is also killing your rankings for everything else.

How to fix it:

  • Search your business name in incognito mode. If you are not #1, something is wrong.
  • Check your Google Business Profile is verified and has the correct name, address, and phone number.
  • Make sure your site has a clear title tag with your business name.
  • Get your NAP (name, address, phone) consistent across every directory and citation.

7. You Do Not Have Any Proof on Your Homepage

Trust is the currency of the internet. If someone lands on your site and does not see social proof within 5 seconds, they are leaving.

What it means: No reviews, no testimonials, no case studies, no "as seen on" badges, no number of jobs completed — there is nothing to convince a stranger they should trust you.

How to fix it:

  • Add a review carousel or static review quotes to your homepage. Google reviews displayed on your site build instant trust.
  • Show a number: "200+ roofs replaced" or "1,500+ satisfied customers."
  • Add real photos of your work. Stock photos kill trust; real project photos build it.
  • If you have a case study (like the Gaithersburg roofer we documented), feature it prominently.

The Bottom Line

Your website is either your best salesperson or your most expensive mistake. These 7 signs are easy to check. Run through them this week. If you find 3 or more, you are leaving money on the table.

Here is the good news: none of these are hard to fix. Speed problems, mobile issues, trust signals — these are all solvable in a week or two. The bad news: most business owners do not check, and their competitors who do check are winning the customers they should be getting.
