Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website

Here's a hard truth for Maryland contractors: most of your customers will find you on Google Maps and Search before they ever visit your website.

When a homeowner in Rockville searches "roofer near me" or "deck builder Gaithersburg," Google shows them a map with three local contractors at the top. If you're not in that top three, you're invisible.

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is your ticket into that top three. And the best part: it's free.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Profile

If you haven't claimed your GBP yet, start here:

  1. Go to google.com/business
  2. Search for your business
  3. If it exists, claim it. If not, create it.
  4. Google will mail you a postcard with a verification code (5–14 days)

Step 2: Nail Your Business Information

Category

Choose the most specific category that applies: Roofer, General Contractor, Bathroom Remodeler, Kitchen Remodeler, Deck Builder, Siding Contractor, Masonry Contractor.

Service Areas

Set your service area to the cities you actually serve. Don't set it to "entire state of Maryland" if you only work in Montgomery County.

Step 3: Optimize Your Description

Your business description is 750 characters. Use it wisely.

Example: "Blue Ridge Contractors is Gaithersburg's trusted roofing and siding company. We serve homeowners throughout Montgomery County, Frederick County, and Central Maryland. With 15 years of experience, thousands of satisfied customers, and a 5-star rating, we're the contractor Maryland homeowners trust. Get a free estimate today."

Step 4: Add Photos and Videos

Businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs. Goal: at least 20 high-quality photos, updated quarterly.

Step 5: Collect and Respond to Reviews

Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for local search. Ask every satisfied customer to leave a review. Respond to every single review.

Step 6: Use Google Posts

Post at least once a week: What's New, Events, Offers, Products.

Step 7: Enable Messaging and Booking

Enable direct messaging, booking, and Q&A. Respond within 24 hours.

Common GBP Mistakes

  1. Using a P.O. Box as your address
  2. Duplicate listings
  3. Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone)
  4. Not updating hours
  5. Ignoring insights
